Distribution: a new frontier for PSA?

PSA's brilliant results refer to a "Tavares method", the success of which is indexed to a certain harshness for the employees first of all, but also for the other "stakeholders" and, in particular, for the suppliers. As the company extends its offensive beyond the product to take a very close interest in the business of distribution networks, the risk of a potentially problematic future for them becomes increasingly tangible. 
Even the current pandemic does not seem likely to affect the success of PSA, which is taking advantage of its strategy of lowering its break-even point to maintain its pricing power and profitability in the crisis. As Florence Lagarde noted on Friday, P. de Rovira is very explicit on this subject: PSA intends to "choose its distribution channels" and favour the most profitable mixes even if it means letting volumes slip and losing customers.

Report of the Journée n° 256: Marc Alochet, Polytechnique, i3-CRG, " Technological breakthroughs and the dynamics of an industry, the transition to electromobility ".

Marc Alochet intervenes at the Journées du Gerpisa. This year, they focus on how the Covid-19 crisis is changing the trends that were already present in the auto industry, including electrification.
His starting point is the fact that electrification is on the move. However, this is not a voluntary transition. As we saw the previous Journée with Tommaso Pardi, there is strong regulatory pressure on manufacturers by the European Union. Other elements must also be taken into account, such as the suppression of internal combustion vehicles in city centres, or carbon neutrality objectives in certain cities. For example, over the last 2-3 years, most manufacturers have started manufacturing electric vehicles (EVs). These will be available on a massive scale around 2022. lire la suite

Marc Alochet intervient dans le cadre des journées du Gerpisa. Cette année, elles s’intéressent à la manière dont la crise du Covid-19 modifie les tendances qui étaient déjà présentes dans l'industrie auto, dont l’électrification.
Son point de départ est le fait que l’électrification est en marche. Or il ne s’agit pas d’une démarche volontaire. Comme on l'a vu lors de la journée précédente avec Tommaso Pardi, il y a une forte pression de la réglementation sur les constructeurs par l’Union européenne. Il y a faut prendre aussi en compte d'autres éléments tels que suppression de véhicules thermiques dans les centre villes, ou les objectifs de neutralité carbone dans certaines villes. Ainsi, depuis 2-3 ans, la plupart des constructeurs se sont lancés dans la construction de véhicules électriques (VE). Ceux-ci seront disponibles massivement vers 2022. lire la suite

Changes in New Value Chains in North America

The decision to make changes in the value chain architecture in North America, in a similar fashion to how it is in the rest of the world, is made by the Board of Directors of the assembly plants. Today in Mexico there are already 14 companies assembling automobiles in the country: two American companies (GM and Ford); four Japanese (Nissan, Honda, Toyota and Mazda); three German (VW, Audi and BMW); one Korean (Kia-Hyundai); two Italian (Chrysler and Fiat) and one Chinese company (JAC), in a joint venture with Inbursa, which is a Mexican company. We’re not unaware that Audi is one of VW’s 12 brands, and that Chrysler and Fiat are the same company, but in both cases, in Mexico, they have been legally registered as separate firms.

The production of these companies, which favors their country of origin, in Mexico, in 2019, can be seen in the following table:
