The automobile industry was restructured in the NAFTA region after the 2008 economic crisis. Our research aims to determine how the production was affected in the different regions and the way the industry has been developed depending on the types of cars that are built in each country. From information granted by Automotive News – closing and opening of facilities, establishment year, production volume and product portfolios changes, between 2007 and 2011- we analysed the industry. This work suggests that the effects of restructuring have many sources, not just cost reduction, and that the behaviour of opening and closing plants in different regions may vary, and it is not a zero-sum game.
